When facing a dental emergency, you probably feel scared and unsure about how to save your tooth or relieve your pain. Fortunately, the dental team at Bays Dental Clinic offers emergency dental appointments to help you when you need it most. It’s important to be able to recognise a dental emergency and know what to do until you can reach our dental clinic for help.

Recognising a Dental Emergency

At Bays Dental Clinic, we understand it can be difficult to recognise a dental emergency; if you have experienced any of the following, we need to see you in our dental clinic as soon as possible:

Tooth Pain

If you have a toothache that doesn’t subside with over-the-counter medications or you are experiencing extreme sensitivity to hot and cold, we need to determine the underlying issue. Tooth pain won’t usually go away on its own, so don’t wait to contact us.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If your tooth gets knocked out, we must see you as soon as possible to try to save your tooth.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

When you break or chip a tooth, you are more susceptible to infection or further damage, so we need to repair your tooth as soon as possible.

Broken or lost restoration

If you break or lose a dental crown, bridge or filling, bacteria can enter the exposed area and cause an infection, so contact us for an emergency appointment.

Immediate Steps to Take in Various Dental Crises

Until you can reach our dental clinic, here are the steps to take for your specific dental emergency:

Tooth Pain

You can place a cold compress on the affected area and take an over-the-counter pain reliever.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Carefully pick the tooth up by the crown; avoid touching the roots. Try to gently place the tooth back into its socket. If that doesn’t work, store your tooth in your cheek or a glass of milk until you reach our dental clinic.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

If possible, save any pieces of your broken tooth. Apply a cold compress to help with the pain. If you are bleeding, place gauze on the area until the bleeding stops.

Broken or Lost Restoration

If you can place the filling or crown back in place, do so with dental cement, toothpaste or a piece of sugarless gum. This will protect your tooth until you arrive for your emergency appointment.
